The Beauty Mantra opinion

Sometimes people are just loyal to some brands and no matter how good/bad a product is, we end up purchasing them out of goodwill. While some brands stay true to their value, some are inconsistent with the outcome. MAC has created a niche for itself and has a steady base of loyal fans. From my experience, I have found that MAC maintains an above standard quality and the only times I am disappointed is when I end up buying the wrong shade for my skin tone.

Nevertheless, my search for a perfect powder had ended a long time ago when I discovered MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Powder. One would always find this powder in my cosmetic pouch at any given time – the only variant is the shade! The powder is finely milled and has a velvety feel to it. The shades I use range from a NC35 to NC42 depending on the season and how tanned I am. During winters, when I go shades lighter, I use the darker shades for contouring and it works perfectly fine.

Although the compact comes with an applicator sponge, I prefer using a kabuki/powder brush as I find that the brush helps with settling the powder in pores and has a good airbrushed finish. The sponge tends to make the powder look cake-y on my skin. This powder is ideal for people with normal combination to oily skin as it blots any excess oils and has a mattifying finish. The coverage is flawless, and ranges from medium to heavy.

I use the powder to set foundation and sparingly for touch ups. When used as touch up – it does absorb excess oil produced as the day wears on, however exercise caution on the amount applied as you might want to avoid a patchy or cake-y look.  The MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Powder can be used on its own, without a foundation, and the coverage is amazing. It’s perfect for days when you feel lazy and still have to look presentable and cover those blemishes! The smell is neutral and somewhat like sand, and does not bother the nose.

I have heard some people say that it causes them to break out, but I have not experienced it myself. As powders work by blocking the pores, it is best to remove them before going to bed and let the pores breathe. Use a good quality make up remover without alcohol and keep the face clean to avoid breakouts. Also, the key to a good finish is using a moisturiser before the makeup routine. Moisturisers (best is primer is used next) avoid creating dry patches on skin and thus the powder does not appear flaky when applied.

Note: Make sure you test the product for the right shade in a store before you buy and avoid buying online, if for the first time.

The things I loved about the MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Powder are:

  • Flawless, matte finish – the coverage is just too good and evens out the skin tone.
  • Availability of a range of shades – MAC tends to cater to all skin tones and there is a perfect match for everybody.
  • Long wearing – not sure about the 8 hours promise but it does last longer than most powders. I would say a good 4-5 hours.
  • Foundation benefits – It works just as good as a light to medium coverage foundation for days when I am taking it easy. However, for a perfect finish use it with a foundation (works well with any foundation).

Would I repurchase the product?

A definite yes! It’s pricey but once you try it, you will know that the money is well invested J
