The Beauty Mantra opinion

In general, I’m a fan of Estēe Lauder products. Most of their products deliver the results promised, are of high quality and contain well researched ingredients. In their Idealist range, I have tried their Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher serum before and absolutely loved it.  So when they came out with the Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator serum, I bought it without thinking twice.

The packaging is the same as the Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher except for the colour of the bottle. The first thing you would notice is the citrus-y fragrance. While the citrus fragrance is usually refreshing and awakening, I found it a tad too strong in this product. The second thing one would notice is that this serum has fine gold shimmer particles in it. That’s right! – a serum has shimmer particles! Serums are concentrated skin care products and I do not know why one would put cosmetic ingredients in it. Not that it does anything too harmful –in fact it gives a good radiant appearance to the skin – but I am definitely not a fan of anything skin care that comes with shimmer particles. I feel it is absolutely unnecessary and as serums are applied before moisturisers and makeup, shimmer particles tend to block the pores and may lead to breakouts. But my dislike towards shimmer particles aside, the serum gives a glow to the skin and acts as a good base to makeup.

As with all serums, it is applied before the moisturiser and after the toner. The Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator serum gets absorbs into the skin easily and is lightweight and silky in texture. It does not make the skin look oily and gives an illuminated appearance. I must get out and say it – this product acts as a great primer. The skin is evened out and make up slides on smoothly. You can even skip using a primer if you are using this serum. But then again, this product is supposed to be a serum and act as a treatment product. So any cosmetic benefits are just a nice to have.

The ingredients that are of mention are Ascorbyl Glucoside and Citrus Grandis which are the antioxidants.  Ascorbyl Glucoside also helps with whitening, and so does the Salicylic acid in it. It also contains wheat germ, turmeric, cucumber (anti inflammatory), mulberry (whitening), Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract (astringent and moisturiser) and yeast extract. One look at the ingredients and we know that the primary function of this serum is to act as a whitening agent thus reducing the unevenness in the skin, and as an anti-oxidant.

Talking about the affects brought about by using the Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator serum, it is a good serum for reducing dark spots and skin discolorations.  I have used the entire bottle, and I must say that I am not disappointed. While I loved the Pore Minimising Skin Refinisher, this serum has not done anything too miraculous. I haven’t found any visible changes to the redness I have on my skin, but it definitely did reduce the unevenness to a significant extent.  It did not break me out as much as I expected and I attribute it to the Salicylic acid in the serum. The illuminating effect the description talks about is not a real change in the skin but a cosmetic radiance caused by the shimmer in it. The serum is good for any skin type but I would highly recommend it for oily skin types as it has astringent properties.

The things I loved about the Estēe Lauder Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator are:

  • Lightweight and silky in texture – gets absorbed easily and leaves the skin smooth to touch
  • Primes the skin – acts as a good primer and is perfect for makeup
  • Evens the Skintone – it does lighten the skin and visibly evens out the dark patches
  • Golden shimmer particles – totally unnecessary although it brightens the skin when applied

Would I repurchase the product?

No. The serum is worth trying but I have not loved it to bits that I would repurchase it.
